Why it’s Important to Incorporate Antioxidants into Your Skincare Routine

Let’s get a little nerdy and spill some science tea. Often, we don’t consider where antioxidants come from or why we would even incorporate them into our skincare routine. Our skin is the largest organ in our body, and we often overlook what goes on our skin and into our system. Antioxidants help suppress inflammation, which is caused by oxidative damage. We like to think of them as little firefighters diminishing tiny fires on and in the body.

Antioxidants help cells repair themselves against free radicals, and no, we are not talking about the band from Texas. Free radicals are unstable molecules that cause damage because they are lonely and missing an electron. Because of their loneliness, they try to bond with atoms or molecules to feel whole and complete. This causes oxidative stress or unstable chain reactions in the body, through forms of inflammation. Antioxidants stabilize free radicals by keeping them from reacting or bonding to other atoms or molecules.

Okay, enough Bill Nye, let’s talk about why they are important to incorporate into your skincare routine. Inflammation takes on many forms. In the terms of our skin, it often looks like puffiness, redness, blotchiness, dark spots, fine lines, and acne. Certain antioxidants can help repair the cells in your skin to help reduce inflammation. A popular antioxidant that is added to many over-the-counter products is vitamin C. This essential vitamin helps improve collagen production and can protect the skin from environmental damage. Since our bodies cannot produce vitamin C organically, we have to supplement it through our diets and skincare products.

Here at Laughing Tansy, we understand how important it is to incorporate antioxidants in skincare. Our herbalist develops all of our facial products with our Laughing Tansy antioxidant blend. This is our secret weapon in supporting your skin’s natural ability to heal itself. We use this in our ever-popular Amber Glow Serum, our Sun Dew Waterless Lotion, and our 24 Eye Serum, all of which will help you fight off those lonely free radicals, and promote balance in your skin’s tone.

We harness the healing power of herbs to support our own natural ability to repair and regenerate. Incorporating botanical extracts and herbal infusions into your skincare routine helps boost your overall glow and also strengthens your connection to the earth. We love antioxidants for their power to assist us in cellular repair. It is fascinating that our bodies can naturally heal themselves from environmental stressors. A little help from certain herbs and botanicals can go a long way, and we are on a mission to incorporate this type of herbal support into mainstream skincare.
